GANGOTRI TEMPLE

Gangotri the sacred river of India transcends into the earth to absolves the signs of human beings and this is the reason why the Gangotri basin bears so much of importance.Being the origin of sacred river,Gangotri in Uttarkashi district is being determine to be the holy place for the devotees and is recognised as Shri Gangotri Dham where the shrine of goddess Ganga is being worshiped by thousands of pilgrims.

The temple town of Gangotri is located just 97 km from Uttarkashi. Gangotri is believed to be the site where Ganges descended to Earth on the matted locks of Lord Shiva. The place also houses the temple of Vishwanath and Kuteti Devi.
The marble built 20 feet high temple of Gangotri is around 300 years old. This temple devoted to Goddess Ganga was built in the 18th century by a Gurkha commander Amar Singh Thapa. In the 20th century, the Maharaja of Jaipur refurbished the shrine.

  1. ARCHITECTURE OF GANGOTRI The gurkha general amar Singh thapa built the temple in the traditional north India architecture style sometime in the 18th century. Unlike other temples that have elaborate carving, the gangotri temple is essentially simple, made of white granite.it is about 20 feet high, is white in appearance and has the usual entrance via the sabha mandap leading to garbhagriha housing the dietys idol.there are three main cupolas topped with golden spires and a few minor ones.architecturally, the temple is not a model of exquisite design but it is the spirit that draws people to this place
